The Fall Makeup Trends

Magazines and beauty websites use the runway looks to forecast where things are going in terms of makeup colors and styles. For this fall color trends, they have pointed towards the following:

Peach Petal Blush & Highlighter

Peach/Pink Blush – Rather than a dramatic or saturated hue, blush seems to be veering more towards a glowing, radiant shade that works on the apples of the cheeks, hollows and also on the brow, temples and other areas of the face in need of a dash of color. This is also why contouring is going a bit less dramatic, and instead far more subtle use of contouring is taking center stage.

Pale Foundation – On top of that wash of blush rather than a deep contour, foundation for those with fair skin is going even paler than before. With one expert explaining that “natural skin tones, with pale and beige shades of foundation cropping up” dominated the runways. Even more interesting was the total absence of makeup for many shows. However, those foundation-free or nearly bare looks did have some hits of color, as we see in the next few points…

Eyeliner – From heavy black eyeliner to barely there applications, it seems that black eyeliner is among the hotter trends. Consistencies varied, but against a pale complexion or lighter base, it is all about the eyeliner. “Waterlined” is another eyeliner and eye trend with “dainty, precisely waterlined eyes” big for the season. These are in line with the minimalist makeup applications, yet overly dramatic cat’s eye applications are also making a comeback. Bedroom smokey eyes and colored eyeliners are also hot ways to make the most of your eyeliner.

Hints of color – Again, as one expert noted, “From unexpected streaks of bright eyeliner to pops of bright mascara, color seeped into even the most traditional looks this season”. Want an eye lined in yellow against a minimalist makeup application? That can work. Blue seems to be everywhere and heavily trending, so pops of blue at the eye can work well with those who want to be on trend.  Statement eyeshadow is also a trend in line with this, and it is a look worn without other makeup. Bold purple, orange or yellow lids against a makeup free face will bring lots of drama to a typically low-key seasonal palette. Multi-color and blocked eyeshadow is also a look to explore, or you can opt for abstract eyeliner.

Brightness – One trend that we hope remains on trend for seasons to come is the wonderful trick of applying a spot of silver to the inner eye. Blended and subtle or bold and dramatic, it is a wonderful way to brighten the eyes and draw attention to them, and it works well with minimalist or lowkey applications.

Brows – Another unique way to go low-key and minimal in your autumn makeup is to focus on the brows. Long gone are the skinny plucked brows. Instead, brushed and accented brows, filled in with pencils to match the natural color are a wonderful style. Messy brows, oversized brows, and barely tamed brows are all great looks.

Glitter – Autumn is a perfect time to bring in the gold, and this season you’ll see eye treatments (shadow, liner, etc.) emphasizing the glitz of shimmering metallics.

Colored mascara – From the minimalist “no mascara” looks to the appearance of colored mascaras in such unseen hues as lilac, bright white, yellow and more, you’ll want to experiment with your mascara looks. Pair with the silver accent in the inner eye area and you’ve got a new, signature look!

Look to the lips – The trend to wine-colored lips against pale or makeup free faces is in! Glosses and tints are the preferred methods of creating this look, but nude lips are also coming into their own (but only if paired with a more dramatic eye or brow). If you do go with a lipstick – be sure it is red or wine as these are the trending shades this fall.

And how do you wear these trends? Let’s consider a few expert tips on that matter.

Wearing Fall’s Makeup Trends

Go ahead and ask experts for the do’s and don’ts of fall makeup and they are likely to ask a few pointed questions. For instance, are you going to go the darker angle (using darker or more dramatic lip and eye makeup)? Maybe you want the washes of color that the minimalist looks are advising? Perhaps you just want to know how to finally succeed with a red lip?

Here are our tips:

Dramatic – If you are going for the darker eye and lips, choose one over the other. You’ll want to use a liquid eyeliner for controlled definition, and you’ll want to definitely use some mascara to keep control over the size of your eyes when your look is completed.

Pale pink – If you are going for the pale pink and tan washes trending this fall, choose the ideal shades for your skin tone and then stick to one area of the face or feature. Whether it is color around the eyes, the lips or even the cheek – just go with one and then add a pop of color or a trending style of application – i.e. a wash of pink on the cheeks but a more dramatic eye.

Going minimal – Maybe you like the idea of minimalism? If so, start by creating an optimal skin care routine (we’ll look at that shortly). You then need to improve the areas you are leaving almost free of makeup. For example, fill in the brows and get them in great shape. Then figure out where you want to put emphasis – even a minimalist face needs an accent such as the eyes or the lip. Keep it low key, clean and you’ll find balance.

Mastering red – Wearing a red lip is essential, but a lot of us just cannot figure out how to master that look. To do it, you’ll need to first line the lip to prevent color from bleeding. Then, find a shade with an undercurrent of blue as this actually makes your teeth look whiter. Try to exfoliate your lips before any dramatic color is applied, and do not choose a glossy finish.

Gold – The glitter looks are fun but can be “off” if you don’t know how to use them. Start with experimentation to see where glitter looks best on you – it could be the lips, cheekbones or brows. Apply with control, using a primer and brush and always go for shimmer more than actual glitter.

And while we are still looking at the face, let’s take a few moments to consider how to transition skin care into the season.

Transitioning Your Fall Skin Care Routine

The basic skin care routine anyone should follow would look like this:

Cleanse

Tone

Apply serums

Moisturizer

Sun block

Periodically: Exfoliate, peel, or mask

This is a very simple process, yet a lot of us get it wrong. It has to be designed around your skin type (sensitive, mature, oily, dry, and so on). This can change with the seasons, so start by determining if your face is dry or aging, acne-prone or oily, and so on. Which condition is the dominant one? Use products designed for that skin type – even if you were not using them for the summer.

Then, consider ways of combatting the coming winter conditions by improving the potency of the products you use this fall. A good way to do so would include:

  • Invest in products for the hands and the nails
  • Purchase a night cream full of anti-aging, deeply hydrating and healing ingredients
  • Choose a richer daytime moisturizer (and one with SPF protection, if possible)
  • Consider using a hydrating cleanser rather than one that could strip the skin of oil or moisture
  • Use body balms and lip moisturizers, too!
  • Consider makeup with hydrating ingredients, particularly if you use foundation or base makeup

Start to update this routine now, and you’ll see improvements in your skin immediately and throughout the fall. As winter arrives, your skin will be in such good shape that makeup applications look great and even trickier lip applications go on smoothly!

And now that makeup and skin care are up to date, what about your hair?  What are the fall color trends there?

Wearing Fall’s Hair Trends

fall color trendsYour “bad hair days” may not end along with the more humid conditions. In fact, many people simply transition from one tricky season to another as summer turns into autumn and then winter. That is why you need to update your hair care regimen along with the skin care. This is amazingly simple and just means shifting to a hydrating shampoo and conditioning treatment, or even a vinegar rinse that is a good shampoo alternative.

If you are someone who is going to use the hair fall color trends, you will definitely want to find out more about the color preserving cleansers and conditioners.

And as to those fall color trends, here are some of the latest in both color and style:

fall color trendsCreamy blondes are a nice mixture of starker white and richer blond – ideal for post-summer transitions into darker hues. You can also go “bronde” which is a rich combination of brunette and blonde hues giving a rich caramel tone

Highlights are leaning towards the caramel hues so popular in the fall season. They should frame the face or bring light to the crown and face area. A great look would allow you to pull your highlighted locks into a golden bun hovering just above a richer caramel base.

Dramatic black or “raven” black is another hot trend and goes well with the red lips, dramatic eyes and pale complexion trends in makeup. That is not the only way to wear this look, though, as it pairs beautifully with a more golden complexion, darker tone and shorter, dramatic styles

Roots are trending and pale hair with dark roots is a hot look (and one lots of us appreciate between full colorings). This is particularly appealing when hair is pulled into a pony-tail, but it also works nicely if paired up with highlights that give hair paler tips and richer roots

And the styles to pair with these colors are incredibly appealing with runways showing off lots of long and straight styles, accented by high sheen and clean “blow out” looks; lots of unusual braids – typically done on heads of opulently long hair; topknots done with a messier look; and classic bobs that show off the neck or even bordering on a pixie style.

So, you are now fully informed as to the looks you’ll want to cultivate fall color trends. It is fair to say that this season is one of the most flexible and liberal in years with tons of creativity and freedom to rock a wide array of looks. Whether you are a plain-faced and top-knotted enthusiast or eager to experiment with a bold red lip, raven dark hair and ivory foundation that is oh-so-Snow White – this is the time to do it. Get your skin (face, body and even hands and lips) into good condition now, and you’ll have lots of fun testing out the latest looks as the cooler weather kicks in.
