How to Depot Eye Shadow
If you’ve never moved an eye shadow pan out of one palette into another, you may not even be aware that this is possible. This is called depotting and it’s pretty standard for pros to depot powders and move them to other palettes. Depotting is an easy process, but it takes just a bit of patience to prevent the powder from getting crushed.
First, warm up a flat iron or get out your blow dryer. You need to use heat to loosen the glue holding the pan in place in the palette. Simply place the palette on top of the flat iron for about three minutes or blow the back of the palette with the blow dryer until the pans move. Give this part some time because the more of the glue you can melt, the easier it will be to perform the next part.
Next, you’ll need either a butter knife or a pair of tweezers to pry the makeup pan out of the palette. In addition to the glue holding it in place, the tight squeeze from the other pans in the palette are also keeping it where it’s at. Carefully pry the pan out of the palette being careful not to accidentally stab the powder or yourself.
Now just pop the powder into the Magnetic Palette! You may need to place a magnetic sticker on the back of the pan if it is not metal or isn’t sticking well.
If you are worried that you may not be the best at depotting without ruining a powder, try it out on one of the colors you don’t want first. That’ll let you practice the technique without the risk.
How to Care for the Magnetic Makeup Palette
To clean the Magnetic Makeup Palette, simply remove all the pans from the palette, and wipe it out with a damp, soapy cloth. Be sure to never soak it or get it overly wet. Then dry it and let it completely air dry before putting your products back in it. It’s that simple!
Fixing Crushed Eye Shadow
If you do happen to crush your eye shadow during the depotting process, don’t panic! It’s an easy fix. First, go ahead and use a pencil or pen to crush up the bigger pieces of powder, till you have a little pot of tiny pieces. This makes it easier to get it all back together.
Then, fill a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol and lightly spray the broken powder. You need it to get a good soaking so be sure it does get thoroughly wet. Next, wrap a coin that is the same size as the powder in a tissue, and press it into the wet powder. Hold it in place for about 30 seconds. This is packing the powder all back together.
Now gently lift the coin up and let the whole thing air dry. Once it is dry, clean the edges to get rid of the excess. Remember to cover any powders around the broken one while you are spraying the rubbing alcohol!
