How Does Deodorant Work?

Women often wonder “Why do I sweat?” and think “It’s so gross.” Sweat, also known as perspiration, itself is a clear fluid that is almost odorless. Deodorants and antiperspirants work by targeting bacteria that cause odor and reduce it.

Many people believe antiperspirant and deodorant are the same thing. The two may have the same purpose, but are very different. It’s important to understand the difference between the two to fit your needs. Antiperspirant work by clogging, closing or blocking the pores with powerful astringents such as aluminum salts. Aluminum salts prevent the pores from releasing sweat. Deodorants work by covering body odor. The smell of “sweat” actually isn’t “sweat,” the smell is actually caused from the heating action from bacteria. Deodorants work in three ways: preventing the action of bacteria in the perspiration, preventing the secretion of perspiration or by masking off the unpleasant smell with a pleasant smell. When deodorants advertise as preventing the secretion of perspiration, they automatically become an antiperspirant.

Deodorants that contain antiseptic substances kill or inactivate bacteria, which may be responsible for the odor. Deodorants that mask the smell of the odor may contain artificial scents or essential oils. Lastly, antiperspirants work by using aluminum salts to block or clog the pores to prevent sweating.

There are many different deodorants on the market and it’s important to find one that fits your needs, depending on the level of perspiration. Wondering why you sweat is completely normal and with all the choices of products out there, it’s easy to find a deodorant that works best for you.
