Foundation Makeup 101: Liquid Foundations

As the most common and most popular type of makeup foundation, liquid foundation can universally be used on any skin type. Liquid foundation has many different formulations, from a matte look to a moist and dewy look. Makeup preferences will determine what liquid foundation is best each indivdual to use.

Whether the skin type is dry, normal, combination, or oily, there is a liquid foundation for you. Here’s a quick rundown on the different types of liquid foundations best for each skin type.

For dry skin, look for a foundation with an added moisturizer. This makeup will generally have a creamier consistency and will have a hydrating effect. The label will say “moisturizing” or “hydrating.”  Some products may even mention it’s for dry skin.

For normal skin, a lightweight liquid foundation works best. Normal skin does not need heavy coverage. When choosing a liquid foundation for normal skin, anything with a light moisturizer will enhance the skin, leaving a flawless complexion.

Combination skin is harder to buy products for. Considering some parts of the face may be normal and some may be oily. The “T-Zone” is the part of the face that produces the most oil during the day. When shopping for a liquid foundation for combination skin, it is best to buy two different products: A foundation for normal skin, and one for oily skin. The foundation for normal skin will  be applied on the face (avoiding the T-Zone.) The foundation for oily skin should be applied only onto the T-Zone. An alternative instead of buying two different liquid foundations is to purchase a foundation for normal skin, apply it on the entire face and simply dust on a powder such as a pressed, mineral, or translucent powder over the T-Zone or any oily spots on the face.

For oily skin, buying liquid foundation can be tricky. Paying attention to the label is very important. Oil-free foundation is formulated to reduce oil production during the day. For breakouts, some product lines may also contain a small percent of salicylic acid to reduce the amount of bacteria in the pores.

When applying liquid foundation, the Pink Teardrop or Purple Pear sponge works best for full even coverage.
