Dry Skin Defined

Dry skin is opposite of oily skin, and is considered alipidic. Alipidic skin is a skin condition that lacks oils. The follicle is very small and the sebum production is minimal. Smaller follicles indicate dry skin.

Dry skin needs extra care because it lacks protection. The acid mantle and barrier function is not considered healthy due to the lack of lipids. The texture is rough and tight, and may be visibly dry.

Thick creams and humectants are recommended for this skin condition. Thicker products tend to lay on top of the skin to reduce transepidermal water loss. These products protect the barrier layer, which combats dryness.

Dehydrated skin and dry skin are commonly mistaken. Dehydrated skin looks thin and flaky, and can also feel tight and dry. This skin condition lacks water rather than lacking oil like dry skin. Dehydration can happen by both internal and external factors such as, medications, coffee, alcohol, sun, over-exfoliation, and harsh products.

Drinking plenty of water and hydrating the skin can minimize these effects. The use of certain products will also promote healthy skin. For dry and even dehydrated skin, concentrate on using hydrating products and products that are gel based, like gel masks and gel facial cleansers.
