DIY & At Home Facials: The Oily Skin Edition
As most of us have seen on Pinterest, at home or “DIY” facials are becoming a big rage. Many of these at home remedies can temporarily improve the appearance of the skin. Depending on how your skin reacts, this could be something you enjoy once a week or so, and is relatively easy to do with ingredients you probably have sitting around your house.
Here’s some fun facials to try for those of you with oily skin. Pay close attention to what ones suit your skin type, you don’t want to use anything too harsh or reactive on your skin.
Banana, Honey and Lemon
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 tbsp. honey
- 10 drops of lemon juice (fresh lemon)
Smash the banana in a small bowl, then add the honey, and squeeze the lemon. Mix together to make a paste. Apply to the face and let sit for 15 minutes. Wash off with warm water. To close the pores, dab the face with a cool wash cloth after thoroughly rinsed.
The banana in this mask will help prevent acne, smooth wrinkles, and help with dry patches (from acne). The honey will aid in moisture absorption in the skin and help it to stay clear and soft. The lemon juice will tighten and brighten the skin tone.
Cucumber and Yogurt
- 1/3 cup of sliced cucumbers
- 3 tbsp. of plain unsweetened yogurt
Add the ingredients into a small blender and blend until the texture is pasty. Apply to face and let sit for 10 minutes. Wash off with warm water. To close the pores, dab the face with a cool wash cloth after thoroughly rinsed.
Cucumbers reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. The cucumber and yogurt paste will help reduce discoloration in the skin, and will keep the skin from feeling oily afterwards.
Tomato and Gelatin
- 1 pack of unflavored gelatin
- 1 cup of tomato juice
Put both ingredients into a small pot. Heat both of the ingredients until gelatin is completely dissolved into tomato juice. Let the mask sit to thicken. Apply to face. After about 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. To close the pores, dab the face with a cool wash cloth after thoroughly rinsed.
Sounds like you’re trying to make tomato gelatin, but this mask is working on pH balancing the skin. The tomato juice will lower the skins pH and the gelatin will make a mask-like consistency and could also act as “glue,” pulling out a few blackheads.
