Best Hair Dyes To Use At Home & At The Salon
Whether you love your hair or hate it, it’s safe to assume you probably don’t want to ruin it through the dye-ing process, no? We asked our resident stylist her thoughts on the best hair to use and also what she recommends for use in salons. Here’s what she had to say:
At Home:
When choosing an over the counter hair dye, it’s important to read the label to avoid certain harsh chemicals. P-Phenylenediamine (PPD), Ammonia, Peroxide, Coal tar, Lead acetate, Resorcinol are all toxic chemicals used in hair dye that should be avoided. Two out of three over the counter hair dyes will contain these ingredients. There are some new products formulated without ammonia and peroxide. These products will usually have this labeled in large lettering on the front of the box so consumers can see how unique the product is. These hair dyes with the left out ingredients are less damaging to the hair and reduce the toxicity level of the hair dye. Box color hair dye that can be bought at the drugstore is good for one shade of desired change in the hair, anything greater than that, should be done by a professional.
At the Salon:
Hair dye formulations are always changing in the beauty industry. Visiting a salon that stays up to date on recent products and trend should always ensure the consumer that they have the latest and greatest products. Most professional hair color formulations now are ammonia-free and sometimes even peroxide free, depending on the type of hair color desired. Salon professionals will know to repair the hair after it has been colored and will recommend the best at home care for the proper treatment. There are also many organic salons that are on the rise, that carry organic hair dyes. Depending on the hairs needs and the person’s preference, a professional will help determine what is best.
