Beauty Blending Sponges vs. Makeup Brushes and Fingers for Foundation Application
There are many benefits of using a beauty blending sponge versus using makeup brushes or your fingers to apply foundation. When using a sponge, you are getting an even application that results in a flawless complexion. Sponges have the benefit of sheering out foundation, which is always a plus if you’re not a fan of “cakey” makeup. Brushes that aren’t regularly cleaned can harbor bacteria inside the bristles that can cause breakouts. Additionally bristles that are too course can cause an uneven looking skin tone. Fingers may also provide an uneven or streaky appearance. If fingers must be used for application, it’s important to cleanse your hands before so that bacteria is not exposed to the skin. Just as makeup brushes should be cleansed, it’s important to wash your sponges after each use!
A method called “stippling”, a common word used among makeup artists, is a technique using a sponge simulating a quick pattern of shading and dotting using varying degrees or solidity. The sponge is great with blending, highlighting and contouring because of its flexibility to get into small spaces, hard to reach areas and even fine lines. When applying foundation with brushes, makeup tends to sit on the skin. Although brushes are supposed to conceal, the bristles separate and cause makeup to get into the hair follicles around the mouth and chin area. This is not ideal when trying to hide the vellus hair or peach fuzz on the face. Using the fingers can create an illusion even coverage, but up close the pores tend to look larger and covered, rather than smaller and sealed by the foundation.
Sponges are a better alternative because of the smooth application. They are more precise than the brush or fingertips, aiding to conceal and give an even coverage.
