Applying Heavier Coverage Foundation with Makeup Sponges

Achieving full, heavy coverage with some foundations may be difficult to do, depending on the foundation and the tools that are being used. If you absolutely love your makeup sponges but can’t seem to get that “full coverage” with them, it may be your makeup or the application.

When applying foundation, it’s okay to layer. If you do not have time in the morning, or do not like the “heavier” look, this may not be the technique for you. First, be sure the makeup is not water-soluble. Usually if it is, the first ingredient is water. It may be difficult to find makeup that is not water-soluble, but if worst comes to worst, try a cream foundation as they are usually thicker and last longer on the skin. What you will need: blending sponges, primer, concealer, liquid foundation, cream or mouse foundation, and some sort of loose powder.

1. Apply primer with clean fingers. When applying primer, use it on the whole face, including eyelids (preps for eye shadow and liner.)
2. Apply concealer with clean fingers to blemishes, under eye circles or dark spots. Blend concealer with blending sponge. If you feel this is still “shearing” your concealer too much, blend with clean fingers.
3. Apply liquid foundation with clean fingers. (Personally I’ve found by applying with fingers and blending with sponge, it gives more coverage than applying with sponge.) Blend foundation with blending sponge.
4. Apply cream/mousse foundation with sponge to desired areas. This would be areas that need the most coverage like under eyes, blemishes or pigmented spots. Blend with blending sponge.
5. Lastly, apply a very light coating of loose or translucent powder to “set” your makeup. This can be applied with a makeup sponge, or a brush.

Not only are the tools that you’re using important to achieve full coverage on your skin, but the makeup too. Pay attention to labels and how the makeup will compliment your skin.
